There are places we never fully leave
Raíz y Recuerdo was born after many years of living far from the place where I grew up.

I still live far from the place where I grew up. Over the years I've learned other languages, other customs, other ways of seeing the world. And yet, the further life takes me, the more clearly certain voices, landscapes and emotions return. I understood that roots don't stay in one place. They travel with us.
Before I understood what music was, it already existed for me through my mother. I remember her singing at home: Antonio Machín, Joan Manuel Serrat, tangos, old films. I didn't yet know their stories or fully understand what they meant, but her emotion stayed inside me. Over the years, especially from a distance, those sounds began to return, not as an exact reproduction of the past but as fragments: a voice, a warmth, the light of a moment that no longer exists in quite the same way.
My mother is present in this album not as a character, but as a trace. In the tenderness of certain melodies, in the fragility of certain silences, and in the need to listen again to something that is no longer physically present, but still lives inside us.

For much of my life I've lived outside Spain. When you stay close to your roots, many of them become invisible, part of everyday life, needing no explanation. When you leave, they start appearing in the smallest details: the way a word is pronounced, the sound of a guitar, a shared meal, a song that suddenly opens a door to childhood.
Over time I understood that my roots hadn't stayed still in Spain waiting for my return. They had traveled with me, mixing with everything I lived far away. That's why Raíz y Recuerdo isn't simply about nostalgia. It's about transformation: not going back to who I was, but recognizing everything that still remains after having changed.
Each composition was born as a distinct memory. Some came from specific places; others from voices, silences, or emotions that had stayed with me for many years after. Together they form a single journey where memory stops looking backward and becomes a way of moving forward.

A Single Image, Drawn by Hand
The cover of Raíz y Recuerdo is an original pencil-on-paper illustration by Chizuru Masumura: a hand holding an ammonite fossil.
The moment I saw Chizuru's drawing, I knew it was the cover. It wasn't a decision I arrived at slowly. An ammonite carries something ancient inside a form that's still whole enough to hold in your hand, and that's exactly what this album is about: memory as something we carry forward, not something we leave behind.
For me, that image says more than a photograph of myself at the piano ever could. It isn't about performance. It's about what stays with us quietly, held rather than displayed, present without needing to explain itself.
I made one deliberate decision early on: no text over the drawing. No title, no name layered on top of it. The image needed to stand completely on its own, the way a memory does before we put words to it. Adding typography would have turned something intimate into something designed. I wanted the cover to stay exactly what Chizuru made: a drawing, whole and unexplained.
That same stillness sets the tone for the album's entire visual identity, from the FYC materials to the videos that accompany it. Nothing about the cover is incidental. The absence of color, the intimacy of the hand, the fossil held rather than displayed all echo the album's own subject: roots that travel with us, memory that changes shape but never fully leaves.

A Hidden Story Between the Titles
Raíz y Recuerdo doesn't end when one piece finishes. From the start it was conceived as a single continuous work. That's why, read in order, the titles of the sixteen compositions form one sentence, in Spanish:
Volví a encontrar1, en mi alma2, en silencio3, como árbol4, un millón de emociones5 de un lugar profundo6, aún sin forma7, aire8, antes de ser hablado9, hecho música10. Volví a sentir11 en sólo dos días12, esa calidez13, dentro del corazón14, con tu presencia15, más cerca que nunca16.
In English, the sentence reads approximately: "I found again, in my soul, in silence, like a tree, a million emotions from a deep place, still without form, air, before being spoken, made music. I felt again in just two days, that warmth, inside the heart, with your presence, closer than ever."

En Sólo Dos Días
An original solo piano work, composed and performed by Jordi Forniés.
It's the only work on the album written for solo piano, and it represents the most intimate moment in the entire emotional journey of Raíz y Recuerdo.
Conceived as a self-contained work within the album, it is an original composition from beginning to end, written entirely for solo piano.
There are moments when life changes slowly, almost imperceptibly. And there are others when everything seems to transform within a very short span of time.
"En Sólo Dos Días" (In Just Two Days) grew out of that feeling: the experience of crossing a threshold and realizing that, on the other side, you're no longer exactly the same person.
The composition doesn't try to narrate a specific event literally. It gathers many experiences of change, departure, uncertainty and return.
Its musical ideas appear, disappear and return transformed, the way memories do when we look back at them from different points in our lives.
It is a piece about movement, but also about what remains while everything changes.
